When can we return to normal life?Dental implantation, whether a single implant or an All-on-4 or All-on-6 system, is a procedure that requires recovery time. Your behavior after the procedure can significantly influence not only the healing speed but also the long-term success of the entire treatment .
So what exactly should you do and what should you avoid if you have an implant? We’ve created a clear guide for you.
✅ What needs to be done after the implantation?
1. Take a break.
On the day of the procedure, and ideally for the next 2-3 days, you should take it easy. Your body needs energy to heal. Lie down, read a book, or watch a series – that’s the best thing you can do for your smile right now.
2. Eat soft and mild foods.
Her mouth will be sensitive, so it’s important not to underestimate the food. Vote:
- Broths and mixed soups
- Mashed potatoes, cooked vegetables, well-cooked pasta
- Yogurt, cottage cheese, seedless smoothies
- Eggs, steamed fish, tender meat
Avoid hard, crispy, sticky, or excessively hot foods.
3. Pay attention to your oral hygiene.
Yes, it’s important to keep your mouth clean even after the implantation. On the first day, rinsing your mouth with clean water is sufficient. From the second day onward, you should use a soft toothbrush and an antiseptic mouthwash (e.g., with chlorhexidine).
Pay special attention to the spaces between your teeth , but gently and without pressure.
4. Sleep with your head elevated.
Swelling is common after the procedure. It can be helpful to sleep with your head elevated for the first few days – for example, with two pillows. This reduces pressure and helps the swelling subside more quickly.
5. Be patient.
Especially with All-on-4 procedures, where four implants are placed and a temporary prosthesis is attached, it’s important to know that the final result isn’t visible for several months. The healing process takes time – but you’re on the right track.
❌ What to avoid after implantation
1. Do not bite down on the side with the implant.
Even if you feel up to it, it’s important to take extra care of the implant during the first few weeks. Biting into hard foods can impair healing.
2. Avoid nuts, seeds, chips, and crusty bread.
Such foods can not only cause pain, but also mechanically damage the wound or irritate the gums .
3. Avoid sports and lifting heavy objects.
Avoid weight training, running, swimming, sauna visits, and heavy gardening for the first 10 to 14 days after the procedure. The pressure and increased blood flow can lead to bleeding or inflammation.
4. Do not smoke or drink alcohol.
Smoking significantly impairs blood flow to the tissue and increases the risk of the implant not fitting properly. Alcohol slows down healing and can interfere with the effectiveness of prescribed antibiotics.
5. Do not ignore pain or swelling.
Mild pain is normal, but if it worsens, you develop a fever, or there is severe swelling, contact your doctor immediately . Don’t wait.
Tips for a smooth recovery
- Drink plenty of water – adequate hydration supports regeneration.
- Cool the cheek area – for example with an ice pack wrapped in a towel (max. 15 minutes, repeated).
- Supplement your diet with vitamins – especially vitamins C, D and zinc support healing.
What happens next? When can we return to normal life?
In most cases, patients can resume their normal daily routine within one to two weeks. With a fixed bridge or crown, it usually takes several months for the implants to become firmly anchored in the bone.
It is always important to attend regular check-ups, pay attention to hygiene and not try to rush back to a “strict lifestyle” .
